Air Polishing & Biofilm Therapy

At Fear Free Dental, we’re always looking for ways to make cleanings more comfortable, less stressful, and honestly… less like old-school dentistry. One of the newer things we’ve added into our hygiene appointments is air polishing with glycine powder and ozone water therapy.

That sounds fancy and science-y, but the goal is actually pretty simple: cleaner teeth, healthier gums, and way less aggressive scraping.

Air polishing uses a gentle stream of warm water, air, and ultra-fine cleaning powder to remove plaque, stains, and biofilm from the teeth and gums. Biofilm is basically the sticky layer of bacteria that constantly builds up in your mouth and likes to cause problems if it hangs around too long.

The powder we use is called glycine, and it’s much finer and gentler than the gritty polishing pastes most people remember from older dental cleanings. Patients with sensitive teeth, gum recession, implants, crowns, or dental anxiety usually notice a pretty big difference in comfort.

We also use ozone water throughout parts of the cleaning process to help rinse and flush around the gums. Ozone has been studied quite a bit for its antimicrobial properties and is one more tool we use to help reduce harmful bacteria in a gentler way.

This type of cleaning can be especially helpful for patients with:

  • Sensitive teeth or gums
  • Dental anxiety
  • Implants, crowns, or bridges
  • Gum inflammation or periodontal disease
  • Heavy coffee, tea, or stain buildup
  • Crowded teeth or orthodontic appliances
  • Chronic bad breath concerns

And no, this doesn’t mean we’re trying to turn your cleaning into some giant complicated “deep cleaning” production. Honestly, it’s kind of the opposite. We want your visits to feel easier, more comfortable, and less pokey-stabby than what most people expect from dentistry.

Most patients say it feels lighter, smoother, and gentler than traditional polishing. You’ll notice warm water and a soft spray against the teeth instead of heavy polishing paste or a lot of scraping. Some patients notice a slightly sweet or salty taste from the glycine powder, but overall, it tends to be much easier on sensitive areas.

Yep. Glycine air polishing is considered safe for natural teeth, crowns, veneers, implants, and gum tissue when used appropriately. The powder is specifically designed to clean biofilm while being much less abrasive than older polishing systems.

At Fear Free Dental, we don’t believe dental visits should feel intimidating or miserable. If newer technology lets us make things cleaner, gentler, and less stressful for patients, we’re probably interested in it.

Air polishing and ozone-assisted hygiene are just a few of the ways we try to make preventive care feel a little more human.
